Doi Moi (Erneuerung) ist das Leitmotiv, unter dem in Vietnam seit 1986 ein Prozess der ökonomischen und gesellschaftlichen Transformation stattfindet. Als Reaktion auf eine schwere Wirtschaftskrise, auf das Zusammenbrechen der Sowjetunion und auf den Reformprozess in der Volksrepublik China hat die kommunistische Führung Vietnams den Weg der kontrollierten Liberalisierung in Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft beschritten. Nach 15 Jahren ist es an der Zeit, eine Bilanz von Doi Moi zu ziehen. Der vorliegende Sammelband fasst Arbeiten zusammen, in denen die tiefgreifenden ökonomischen, sozialen und institutionellen Veränderungen in Vietnam analysiert werden. Bemerkenswert ist dabei vor allem, wie stark im Prozess der Erneuerung alte kulturelle Traditionen wieder aufgegriffen und in einen neuen Zusammenhang gestellt werden. Die Asienkrise bedeutete auch für den vietnamesischen Transformationsprozess einen wichtigen Einschnitt. Zur Zeit ist es fraglich, in welcher Weise der Reformprozess weitergeführt und ob es ein Doi Moi II geben kann.

Doi Moi (renovation) was the leitmotiv for the economic and social transformation which has been taken place in Vietnam since 1986. Facing a deep economic crisis, the breakdown of the Sovjet Union and the rise of the People’s Republic of China the communist leadership of Vietnam decided to follow the road to a controlled liberalization. 15 years later it is time to review the results of Doi Moi. This volume collects articles which analyze the deep economic, social and institutional changes in Vietnam. They show how old cultural traditions could be reanimated and become an important part of new structures. The Asian crisis made a deep cut into the Vietnamese transition. At present it is not very clear, on what way the transition will continue and whether Doi Moi II can be expected.
