Abstract:

There is a certain ambivalence in the relationship between the field of management and the public interest. A closer look at the past 40 years of management theory and practice reveals the frequent ups and downs in the careers of the various concepts and attitudes. In the first part of this paper I will describe these oscillations and identify the underlying drivers. The second part will be dedicated to new perspectives of a management orientation towards the public interest which are attributable to changing environmental contexts.
