Global interconnections are increasingly shaping sustainability challenges. Technological change, energy transitions, social transformations, and climate change call for new forms of collaboration that transcend political, cultural, economic, and disciplinary boundaries. Addressing these complex challenges requires transcultural competence, the willingness and capacity to develop commonalities while respecting cultural diversity. Beyond sustainability, transcultural competence also enables the exchange and co-creation of knowledge by bringing together different perspectives, experiences, and forms of expertise.

This book is the result of the learning and knowledge-exchange journeys of the Transcultural Student Research Groups 2024 and 2025 of the Transcultural Caravan Network (TCN), a project of the Baden-Württemberg Stiftung. Twenty-eight students from diverse countries and universities collaborated through joint research, academic exchange, and intercultural learning, complemented by international research trips to South Africa and Vietnam. Through these experiences, the students explored sustainability and knowledge exchange from transcultural perspectives, learning from different contexts while developing shared understandings and new insights.

The book brings together three interconnected themes: Sustainable Energy Transitions; Business, Supply Chains, and Corporate Sustainability; and Indigenous, Transcultural, and Relational Knowledge. Across these themes, the contributions demonstrate how transcultural dialogue can enrich understandings of sustainability while enabling mutual learning, knowledge exchange, and co-creation. Ultimately, the book highlights how collaboration across cultures, borders, disciplines, and institutions can foster shared knowledge and contribute to more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient futures.
