Aus der Einleitung:

Wenn etwa hundert Jahre nach Marx noch von einem “missing chapter” bezüglich der Transaktionskosten bzw. von einer Wiederentdeckung des Ansatzes gesprochen werden konnte, dann weist das auf die Aktualität des Marxschen Ansatzes hin, denn dieses Kapitel fehlt bei Marx nicht. Die Transaktionskosten sind bei ihm als “Zirkulationskosten” bzw. als “faux frais” ganzer Produktionsweisen nicht nur berücksichtigt, sondern sie spielen eine zentrale Rolle in seiner Kritik der Marktwirtschaft bzw. des Kapitalismus.

Demnach ist die folgende Würdigung von Marx durch Douglass North vollauf berechtigt: “The complex relationships between the productive forces of an economy, the property-rights system of an economy, and the political structure are clearly at the heart of the dilemma of all economies through time in respect of the ability to realize the potential of an economic society. It was Marx's genius to realize that this was the heart of the issue, and a hundred years before modern transactions-costs literature had begun to explore the issue in detail, he provided us with brilliant clues to it. He certainly did not resolve the problems, nor have his followers, but the fact that he recognized the issues and set them in the context of examining overall societal change gives Marx a pre-eminent role as a scholar of economic history. It is worth making sense of Marx.”

Es bleibt aber die Frage, ob der Ansatz von Marx auch heute noch fruchtbar ist, also Elemente enthält, die über die neoklassischen Analysen der New Institutional Economics hinausweisen, und ob von Marx her Aspekte beleuchtet werden können, die in der Neoklassik eher unterbelichtet bleiben. Diese Frage nach den Unterschieden soll im folgenden im Vordergrund stehen. Hierbei geht es um Unterschiede bezüglich − des methodischen Ansatzes (Ansatz bei den Beziehungen der Individuen versus Ansatz beim Individuum) (Abschnitt 2), − des Rationalitätsbegriffs (Handlungsrationalität und Systemirrationalität)(Abschnitt 3) sowie − der Konzepte für die Analysen der gesellschaftlichen Entwicklung in Abschnitt 4.
