Abstract:

Success and required preconditions of large-scale transformation processes in society can be investigated particularly with the help of new institutional economics approaches such as the theory of institutional change and public choice. Using the example of sustainability transformation as one of the “great” societal transformation challenges, this article examines which institutional conditions influence the success of path transitions. On this basis the article develops requirements for a transformation strategy regarding environmental policies and discusses, in particular, demands on scientific policy recommendations of environmental economics transformation research.
