For several years, India has been experiencing rapid economic growth and structural changes that are attracting attention of the academia, policy makers and administrators, both at national and global level. An analysis of the recent trends is important in order to understand and evaluate India's current developments in the context of the goals of equity and sustainability and their implications for future. Unfortunately, much of the current literature is concerned with the dynamics of economic growth and the possibility in maintaining it over the coming decades. Importantly, there has been a significant boost in the growth rate since the early 1990s and particularly after 2003-04. The major focus of the development strategy of the government has been promoting GDP and foreign trade. Now, there are serious apprehensions that the growth rate in GDP and foreign trade may not be able to withstand the global economic crises and encounter a setback, the GDP growth for the year 2011-12 being placed at below 5 per cent only by the International Monetary Fund.

"Wenn in den Medien über Schwellenländer wie Indien und deren wirtschaftliche Entwicklung berichtet wird, ist meist von atemberaubenden Wachstumsraten und tiefgreifendem strukturellem Wandel die Rede. Vor diesem Hintergrund verweisen die Ökonomen Michael von Hauff und Amitabh Kundu mit ihrem Sammelband auf eine entscheidende Lücke in der Beschäftigung mit dem Subkontinent: die ökologische Dimension. Von Hauff und Kundu haben aus diesem Grund Beiträge deutscher und indischer Wissenschaftler gesammelt, die die Bedeutung des Paradigmas der nachhaltigen Entwicklung für die Lösung der durch den rapiden Wandel der indischen Wirtschaft entstandenen Probleme untersuchen. Die Herangehensweise der Autoren sind teilweise detailliert und auf spezielle Felder und Beispiele beschränkt, teilweise überblicksartig und eher konzeptioneller Natur. Amitabh Kundu und Lopamudra Ray Saraswati widmen sich in ihrem Beitrag beispielsweise der Frage der einheitlichen Messung und Überwachung der Auswirkungen des Klimawandels auf die menschliche Entwicklung. Die Autor/innen kommen dabei zu dem Schluss, dass angesichts derzeit fehlender universeller Standards solche Ansätze erst noch entwickelt werden müssen. Sie schlagen hierzu eine Lösung vor, deren Umsetzung die Gründung einer neuen internationalen technischen Klima?Institution erfordern würde. Elena Brosch?Pahlke und Nicola Seitz untersuchen außerdem die soziale Dimension. Dabei wollen sie die Frage klären, welche Rolle Bildung für die nachhaltige Entwicklung haben kann beziehungsweise sollte. Sie kommen zu dem Urteil, dass das indische Bildungssystem - aufgrund extremer Ungleichheiten - derzeit als "incompatible with the concept of sustainable development" (125) angesehen werden muss. Zusammengenommen decken die im Sammelband vorgelegten Analysen ein breites Spektrum an Themen ab und umfassen neben den offensichtlichen wirtschaftlichen und ökologischen Aspekten auch soziale, rechtliche und politische Fragen."
