Werner Güth and Hartmut Kliemt discuss the importance of context in the application of experimental methods using equity theory as an example. They argue that the abstraction from a context in the laboratory experiment is itself a particular context and not a mapping of the general properties of a class of contexts. This implies that the notion according to which perfectly general, quasi-natural regularities can be captured by simple equity models and tested in the laboratory is an illusion. Nevertheless, the authors argue, laboratory experiments are useful for studying the world of behavior under controlled conditions.
