In summary, the Japanese pharmaceutical industry is more competitive now than it used to be in the 1980s, and some companies such as Takeda have now made it into the league table of the world’s biggest pharmaceutical firms. However, unlike other high-tech industries such as electronics, the pharmaceutical industry in Japan has not grown into a world-leading position until now. Growth in this industry results from acquisitions of established firms rather than new entrants.
